Interviewing During COVID Times: First Things First – Part 1

Interviewing can be nerve-wracking in normal times. If you haven’t interviewed for some time or are entering the job market for the first time, you’re likely nervous about the interview process – and interviewing in COVID times presents additional challenges!

Here are 5 tips so you can do your best on a Zoom interview.

  1. After an initial phone or video screening interview you may be invited to a face-to-face

interview on Zoom or a similar platform. Make sure your computer’s audio and video work and that you’re in a room with few distractions. You don’t have to hide all your possessions, but make sure there’s nothing in the room that you wouldn’t mind an employer seeing.

  1. “First Impressions can be lasting impressions.” Keep this in mind as you prepare for your interview.
  2. During COVID times, casual dress, beards and little or no makeup has become the norm for many. Carefully consider how you want to present yourself for that important interview. Dress appropriately for the position for which you are applying – no-t-shirts or hoodies. Make sure your hair is well-groomed and if you use makeup make sure it is not distracting.
  3. Arrive on time! Plan to sign in 5 minutes ahead of time. It is better to be early than to have the employer wait for you. Your Zoom host will let you into the meeting when they are ready.
  4. Smile and show your confidence, energy and professionalism. Now get ready for the important question, “Tell me about yourself.”
