The Virtual Interview: The New World of Interviewing

Have you ever had a virtual interview? It’s different from a live interview on Zoom or a similar video platform. It’s an interview in front of your computer or similar digital device in which you respond to questions that are pre-recorded. There may be a “robot” interviewer present, but no live person will be asking the questions. You will be given a time limit for your responses (perhaps 2 minutes for each question) and then it is time to move on to the next question until the interview is completed. Typically, this is the first step in a series of interviews, and if you are successful, you will move on to the next phase of an interview with a human recruiter or hiring manager. The interview may be evaluated by an algorithm or reviewed by a recruiter.

From the employer’s perspective, this saves time and allows recruiters to view interviews at a convenient time. It’s time-efficient for hiring and saves costs. Others believe there is less unconscious bias in the interview process if the interviewed. Another variation of the virtual interview is a live chat. Oh, the marvels of technology!

From the candidate’s perspective, you take the virtual interview at a convenient time  and may find it to be less intimidating than the face-to-face interview once you are comfortable with this format. There are platforms that allow candidates to practice. Some platforms have practice built in so you can familiarize yourself with the format before the recording begins.
